JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 6, 2011) – The ETSU volleyball team returns home for two key Atlantic Sun Conference matches against Jacksonville and North Florida this weekend inside Brooks Gym. The Bucs welcome in Jacksonville on Friday at 7 p.m. and North Florida on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Heading into the weekend, ETSU sits at 7-10 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Bucs are coming off two losses on the road against Belmont and Lipscomb over the weekend. Belmont and Lipscomb remain atop the Atlantic Sun standings with perfect 4-0 conference marks.
The Bucs are a perfect 1-0 at home thus far after defeating USC Upstate in the conference opener back on September 20. ETSU has also won its last six home matches dating back to October 8 of last season.
ETSU continues to be dominant across the frontline as they lead the Atlantic Sun in blocks with 2.36 per set. The Bucs recorded 2.65 blocks per set last season – the fifth best total in school history and the highest total since rally scoring was put in effect during the 2001 season.
Individually, senior Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) continues to lead the league in blocks at 1.27 per contest. Helping her cause are three matches of double-digit block totals, which is the most by an A-Sun student-athlete since Jacksonville's Melissa Merchant tallied three double-digit matches in 2007 - two of which came in league play. Stancliff is the only student-athlete in the league to post a single double-digit block match so far this season. In addition, sophomore Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) ranks second in the A-Sun in both kills (4.08) and points (4.49).
Friday’s match will be a “Faculty Spotlight” where players invite their favorite professor to be recognized. In addition, it will also be “Facebook Friday” – look for the coupon on our official Facebook page for a free popcorn. Saturday’s match is “Fan Appreciation” – where popcorn and soda are just $1. There will also be free t-shirts to the first 50 fans and a signed volleyball for a lucky fan.
For fans unable to attend the matches this weekend, live video and live stats will be available for both matches. Live video for each match will be shown on ASun.TV for a fee. Meanwhile, free live stats will be available at ETSUBucs.com.
Scouting the Opponents
Jacksonville enters Friday’s match with a 9-10 overall record on the season, including a 2-2 mark in A-Sun play. The Dolphins most recently split two matches against Mercer and Kennesaw State over the weekend. JU defeated Mercer 3-2 before falling to Kennesaw State 3-1. The Dolphins are led by the duo of Alliya Drzewiecki and Alison Loeppky as both average more than 2.25 kills per set. In addition, Loeppky leads the team in blocks at .79 per set. Meanwhile, sophomore Kylie Jacob leads the league in hitting percentage (.353) and Kendall Courtney ranks second in the conference in assists (9.96). ETSU is 5-6 all-time against Jacksonville, but last season the Bucs defeated the Dolphins 3-2 in Jacksonville.
North Florida enters the weekend with an 8-10 overall record on the season, including a 2-2 mark in A-Sun play. The Ospreys are coming off a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Georgia Southern on Wednesday. UNF is led by junior Paige Pridgeon with 3.31 kills per set, while also ranking second on the squad with 2.49 digs per set. Meanwhile, Carolyn Jenkins leads the team and ranks second in the A-Sun with 0.95 blocks per set. Jenkins ranks second to ETSU’s Jamie Stancliff in the category. The Ospreys have been solid defensively as they rank second in the league in opponent’s hitting percentage at .189. ETSU is 7-3 all-time against North Florida, including a pair of victories last season. The Bucs swept the Ospreys in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament, while also earning the regular season victory in Jacksonville.
