JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 23, 2012) – For the second time in the last four seasons the ETSU women’s basketball team will bring a Southeastern Conference foe into the Dome. On Tuesday night, the Lady Bucs look to “Pack the House” as the Blue and Gold take on LSU at 7 p.m. inside the MSHA Athletic Center.
Back in 2008-09, the Lady Bucs gave everything Vanderbilt could handle inside the Dome before the Commodores hung on for a 66-55 win back on Nov. 26, 2008. Despite having an uncharacteristic type of season as ETSU is sitting at 5-14 overall, head coach Karen Kemp’s teams have a history of knocking off SEC foes. The Lady Bucs defeated Mississippi State back in 2005-06, Alabama in 2007-08, and defeated Kentucky, 59-50, in 2008-09.
On Saturday, the Lady Bucs enjoyed their largest margin of victory on the year after handing Lipscomb a 37-point setback, 89-52. Overall, every player contributed in the win, while four players scored in double figures as sophomore Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) led the way with 21 points (8-of-10 shooting) and a career-tying 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, senior Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) bounced back in a big way after not attempting a shot attempt in 19 minutes of play against Belmont. Pickwell registered 17 points (7-of-15 shooting), five rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 25 minutes versus the Lady Bison.
As a team, the Lady Bucs enjoyed season highs in field goal percentage (46.1), field goal makes (35), assists (22), and steals (14) against Lipscomb. In addition, the Blue and Gold held Lipscomb to 26.7 percent shooting (5-of-29 in the first half) and forced the Lady Bison into 29 turnovers.
LSU (13-6) has been ranked as high as No. 20 in the polls this season, but has most recently dropped three straight games after rattling off 10 consecutive wins from Dec. 11-Jan. 12.
The Lady Tigers are coming off a 72-52 setback to Arkansas on Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge. LSU was led by 6-foot-2 senior forward Courtney Jones’ 14-point, 7-rebound performance, while 5-foot-9 junior guard Adrienne Webb finished with 11points.
On the season, 6-foot-2 senior forward LaSondra Barrett leads the team with 11.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, while the Lady Tigers as a whole are outscoring their opponents by 13.7 points per game, 63.5 to 49.7.
Tuesday marks the first-ever meeting between ETSU and LSU.
Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can listen to all the action on WXSM-AM 640 The Extreme Sports Monster as “Voice of the Lady Bucs” John Stevens will carry the play-by-play. Live video will also be available via A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered on GameTracker.
Meanwhile, the first 750 fans who show up will receive a limited edition T-Shirt, while the first 200 fans through the gates receive a FREE Pizza Inn tailgate. Also, over $350 in prizes will be given away throughout the game.
