JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 13, 2012) – Sophomore ETSU women’s basketball standout Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) put together some of the most impressive numbers on the hardwood back in February, and now we are asking the Buccaneer faithful to vote for the Bluffton, Ga. native for the Atlantic Sun CRONS Achievement Award.
Six nominees and their accomplishments are listed on the Atlantic Sun Insider blog, and the recipient of the award is determined completely by fan vote. The winning school receives an award from the Crons Brand, which is the Official Motivation and Apparel Brand of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Crons began sponsoring the monthly "Achiever Award" in January to recognize what A-Sun fans deem the most notable performance of each month.
Joining Mitchell for the month of February nominees are: North Florida’s Parker Smith, USC Upstate’s Gilbert Kemboi, Belmont’s Kerron Johnson, Mercer’s McKenzie Woody and Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl are the nominees for February’s award.
Below are Mitchell’s highlights for the month of February.
Destiny Mitchell put together one of the best nine-game stretches among A-Sun players in February, which led to her being placed on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Team … the Lady Buccaneer sophomore averaged a double-double for the month after posting 15.8 points and 11.2 rebounds, while also forcing 2.2 steals and shooting 59 percent (58-99) from the field in nine February games … Mitchell began the month with an impressive effort at Mercer after shooting 12-of-15 from the field en route to scoring a career-high 30 points … the Bluffton, Ga. native put on a clinic against the Bears as she made 11 consecutive field goals in a 19-plus minute stretch in the second half … just two days after her dominating performance at Mercer, Mitchell recorded one of her six double-doubles for the month with a 15-point (6-of-6 shooting), 10-rebound game at Kennesaw State … Mitchell’s performance fueled a stretch of three consecutive games with a double-double as she averaged 16.3 points and 10.0 rebounds, while shooting 66 percent (21-32) from the field in games against Kennesaw, Jacksonville, and North Florida … after only playing 20 minutes at Lipscomb on Feb. 16, Mitchell closed out the regular season with a bang in games vs. Belmont, Stetson, and Florida Gulf Coast … Mitchell again recorded three straight double-doubles to close out the final three games of the regular season, and her performances continued to get stronger each time out … at Belmont, Mitchell tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds, while she followed that up with 10 points and then a career-high tying 14 rebounds against Stetson … however, Mitchell saved her best for last as she concluded regular season play with numbers that haven’t been put up in the A-Sun in over two years – finishing with 23 points and 20 rebounds against FGCU in Johnson City … Mitchell recorded the A-Sun’s first 20/20 game since fellow Lady Buccaneer standout and two-time A-Sun Player of the Year, Siarre Evans, accomplished the feat back in January of 2010.
Kennesaw State’s Aaron Anderson claimed 54 percent of the fan vote on the Atlantic Sun Insider blog to win the inaugural honor for January. The second-place nominee finished with 19 percent of the vote.
