Knoxville, Tenn., native joins Crew after acquiring his rights from the Montreal Impact

COLUMBUS, Ohio. (March 23, 2012) – After being drafted by the Montreal Impact in the MLS Supplemental Draft in January, ETSU men’s soccer senior Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) became the first Buccaneer to sign an MLS contract on Friday by inking with the league’s Columbus Crew.

The Crew acquired Schoenfeld’s rights from Montreal in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. The club also sent defender Rich Balchan to the disabled list in order to make room for the Knoxville native.

“It’s great to get this chance to play with the Columbus Crew,” Schoenfeld said. “Not many people get a second chance in this league and I feel extremely fortunate to have found such a good fit with Columbus.”

After not receiving a contract from Montreal and being let go in late February, Schoenfeld joined the Crew as a trialist a little over two weeks ago, playing his way through friendlies and camps to earn a spot on the roster.

“I could not be more excited for Aaron [Schoenfeld],” said ETSU men’s soccer head coach Scott Calabrese, who coached Schoenfeld through all four of his years with ETSU. “This is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talents and continue to develop and realize his dream of being a professional soccer player.

“The Columbus Crew signing [Schoenfeld] is a great credit to his continuous hard work during his time at ETSU.”

Schoenfeld will get a chance to take on the squad which did not offer him a contract, as the Crew is set to battle the Montreal Impact in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday. Columbus opened the season with a 2-0 win against the Colorado Rapids on March 10.
