ATLANTA (March 31, 2012) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams posted multiple top performances including senior Cornell Sneed (Miami, Fla.) taking first place in the men’s shot put, as they wrapped up the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech, on Saturday at the George C. Griffin Track and Field Complex.
Sneed crushed his previous personal best of 15.05m with a 16.15m hurl to grab the shot put victory, and now ranks No. 1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the event. Sebastian Dietl (Grobwallstadt, Germany) and Justin Burton (Bastian, Va.) also enjoyed success in the event, with Dietl taking third place by posting a personal best toss of 15.28m and Burton earning fourth at 14.35m. Dietl also set a personal mark in the discus throw with a fifth place effort of 48.66m, while Burton took fifth in the hammer throw at 44.54m.
ETSU was also highlighted by the effort of freshman Jadon Short (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) in the men’s long jump. Short – the Most Outstanding Male Performer and Most Outstanding Freshman at this year’s A-Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships – took second place in the event with a season best jump of 7.13m. Junior Justin Haston (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) joined Short in the long jump and took ninth with a 6.49m mark.
The Bucs added to their top performances in the men’s jumps with Marek Navratil (Olomouc, Czech Republic) taking fourth place in the high jump by clearing 2.03m, and Jason Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) earning fifth in the triple jump with a combined leap of 14.77m.
Freshman Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) was also impressive on the men’s side by earning multiple top five finishes. Jalovy ran in the 1500m and finished in third place with a personal best time of 3:55.28. The Modrice, Czech Republic, native also took fifth place in the 800m by finishing in 1:53.15. Sophomore Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.) competed in the 800m as well, finishing in eighth place at 1:54.47.
In the men’s sprints, Errol Cash (Nassau, Bahamas), Briar Pierce (Crossville, Tenn.) and Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) each snagged a top 10 finish in their respective events. Cash breached the top 10 with a time of 11.11 in the 100m to earn 10th place, while Pierce took 10th in the 110m hurdles by setting a new personal best time of 16.02. O’Dell had the best finish of the three, finishing sixth in the 400m by setting a personal record of 47.65.
Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark) and Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase. Ludvigsen finished 11 seconds behind first place with a time of 9:41.82, while Chase – a week after qualifying for the USATF Jr. National Championships in the 2000m steeplechase – wound up seven seconds behind Ludvigsen by completing the event in 9:48.61.
The women’s side also found success from Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.), Anja Claussnitzer (Chemnitz, Germany), Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic), Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.), Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Jasmine Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Victoria Taylor (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Edgecombe spotlighted the sprints with a sixth place performance in the 100m hurdles by crossing the finish line in 14.30.
In the distance runs, Claussnitzer snatched another sixth place for the Bucs with a time of 2:14.76.
ETSU’s top women’s performances came in the jumps. Vodova represented the Bucs with a top 10 in the high jump by clearing an outdoor best height of 1.68m to take sixth. In the triple jump, Burley earned fifth place with a 12.18m mark, while Monteleone grabbed 10th with a cumulative distance of 11.29m.
Foster and Taylor showed through in the throws. In the shot put, Foster took fifth place with an 11.78m toss, while Taylor came in ninth by posting a mark of 10.85m. Foster also had a top 10 in the discus throw, taking 10th in the event with a distance of 32.01m.
The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams will head to Knoxville, Tenn., next weekend for the Tennessee Challenge.
