JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 10, 2012) – Coming off a non-conference road victory at Radford on Wednesday, the ETSU baseball team returns home to host Stetson in the final home games of the season beginning on Friday at Thomas Stadium.
Friday’s first pitch will begin at 7:05 p.m., Saturday’s contest is set for 2:05 p.m. and Sunday’s home finale is scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m. Live audio and live stats will be available at ETSUBucs.com throughout the weekend. In addition, the five Buccaneer seniors will be honored prior to the game on Saturday.
ETSU heads into the weekend with a 22-26 overall record and a 7-14 mark in conference play, while Stetson comes in with a 31-18 record and a 12-9 mark in the Atlantic Sun.
The Bucs will send sophomore right-hander Jake Long (Anderson, S.C.) (2-7, 4.10 ERA) to the mound to oppose Stetson righty Lindsey Caughel (6-2, 3.88 ERA) on Friday night.
Saturday’s pitching matchup will pit ETSU senior righty John Long (Anderson, S.C.) (6-5, 4.01 ERA) against Stetson right-hander Josh Powers (3-1, 2.79 ERA).
ETSU earned the two-game season sweep of Radford after defeating the Highlanders, 8-4, on Wednesday night. The Bucs used nine different pitchers, while the offense pounded out 13 hits.
Sophomore Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) continues to put up impressive numbers at the plate. Freeman leads the team with a .376 average, while also leading the squad in hits (73), doubles (13) RBI (45) and on-base percentage (.418). The 73 hits ties for the lead in the Atlantic Sun, while the .376 average ranks second in the league and the 45 RBI are third in the A-Sun.
Meanwhile, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) continue to pace the Atlantic Sun in home runs. Scruggs and Pratt both hit home runs at Radford on Wednesday night. Scruggs is tied for the national lead with 18 homers, while Pratt is close behind with 16 long balls.
Stetson is coming off the heels of a home victory against No. 1 Florida State on Wednesday night. The Hatters are led at the plate by Ben Carhart with a .354 average to go along with four homers and 35 RBI. Meanwhile, Sam Kimmel (.346), Robert Crews (.305) and Mark Jones (.305) are each batting over .300 on the season.
The Bucs and Hatters have met 21 times throughout the years with Stetson owning a 13-8 advantage in the all-time series. Stetson has won three out of the last four games against the Bucs; however, ETSU swept the three-game series against the Hatters last time the two teams met in Johnson City during the 2010 season.
Following the weekend series against Stetson, ETSU will hit the road to face SEC opponent Georgia on Tuesday before closing out the regular season at Kennesaw State.
