Men's soccer looks to extend top-25 unbeaten streak to four games
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2012) – With a schedule that currently features three teams inside the NSCAA/Continental Tires top-25, the ETSU men’s soccer team battles its first ranked opponent of the year as No. 17 UAB heads to Summers-Taylor Stadium for a Sunday afternoon contest at 1 p.m.
ETSU (2-1-0) is no stranger to challenging nationally ranked teams, having faced three in 2011 and at least one every year since 2008. In six matches against NSCAA top-25 teams, ETSU is 2-3-1 all-time, including a 2-0-1 mark last year after defeating then-No. 24 UNC Greensboro and then-No. 14 William and Mary. The draw came against then-No. 25 Furman at Summers-Taylor Stadium, 0-0. The Bucs’ three losses all came to North Carolina from 2008-10, with two of those games ending in overtime.
On Friday, ETSU had to grind out a, 1-0, win against Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. Redshirt freshman Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) scored his first collegiate goal in game-winning fashion by netting an 86th-minute strike to lead the Bucs to victory. The win evened up ETSU’s 2012 road record to 1-1-0, and was the Bucs’ second straight win having defeated UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, 3-1.
UAB (2-0-1) played at No. 8 Charlotte on Friday, settling for a, 1-1, draw. The 49ers outshot the Blazers, 26-9, but Kofi Gyawu put in a 39th-minute goal to give UAB a, 1-0, halftime lead. Charlotte responded in the 67th minute, as Donnie Smith leveled the match which proved to be the game’s final goal of the night.
The Blazers two wins so far this season have both come at home against Georgia Southern, 2-1, and Atlantic Sun Conference member Mercer, 2-1.
Sunday afternoon’s meeting will be the first all-time between ETSU and UAB.
