MACON, Ga. (Nov. 14, 2012) – A day after three Buccaneers landed All-Atlantic Sun postseason honors, the ETSU volleyball team placed four scholar-athletes on the conference’s All-Academic Team, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Junior Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) joined sophomores Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.), Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.), and Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) on the list – the most players placed on the list by one institution. All four of these standout scholar-athletes have compiled a cumulative GPA over 3.50 and helped the Bucs receive the AVCA Team Academic award in 2011-12.
“To place these four players on the All-Academic Team is a testament to their dedication of fulfilling their role as a student-athlete,” said head coach Lindsey Devine. “These ladies are high-achieving individuals and clearly have found the balance between being great both on and off the court.”
Devine – 2012 A-Sun Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All A-Sun selection on Tuesday – has generated a 3.556 GPA while majoring in physical education. The Kingsport, Tenn., native was named to the Buccaneer 4.0 Club in the fall of 2011, and is also a two-time A-Sun All-Academic and Dean’s List member. In addition, Devine has received Buccaneer Honor Roll accolades (3.0 GPA or higher) in all four semesters at ETSU.
Meanwhile, Hardy was also a First Team All A-Sun pick by the league coaches on Tuesday, while registering a cumulative GPA of 3.805 in Exercise Science. The sophomore middle blocker was named to the Dean’s List and Buccaneer Honor Roll both semesters, while landing A-Sun All-Academic accolades in 2011-12.
Rice, a bio medical major, has produced a cumulative GPA of 3.832 at ETSU. The Johnson City, Tenn., native was named to the Dean's List and Buccaneer Honor Roll in both semesters last year. Like her other counterparts, Rice also landed on the Atlantic Sun All-Academic List in the fall of 2011. On the court, the sophomore outside hitter mounted four double-doubles this season and set a new career high for block assists (5) and total blocks (5).
Rounding out the group of Buccaneers is Rutledge with a 3.916 cumulative GPA while majoring in English and minoring in education. Rutledge recorded a 4.0 GPA in the spring of 2012 and has been named to the Dean’s List and Buccaneer Honor Roll in both semesters thus far at ETSU. The Kingsport, Tenn., native was also an Atlantic Sun All-Academic selection in the fall of 2011. The sophomore setter ranks sixth in the conference in assists per set (9.79) in A-Sun only matches, while ranking seventh overall in the statistical category with 8.83 assists per set. Rutledge also collected eight double-doubles on the year and set new career marks in assists (64), digs (15) and service aces (3).
Lipscomb’s Caitlin Dotson was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, along with being a unanimous academic selection after totaling a 3.84 GPA. The pre-med major was named Second Team All A-Sun on Tuesday.
The A-Sun Academic All-Conference teams recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s matches.
