Lady Bucs end weekend 0-2
AKRON, Ohio (Feb. 16, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team was dealt another close loss on Saturday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center, falling to No. 69 Oregon, 4-3, to end the weekend in Akron, Ohio with an 0-2 mark.
ETSU (2-2) just came off a 4-3 loss to Akron Friday and was dealt the same fate in a tough battle against the nationally ranked Ducks (8-0). The final point came down to Lana Buttner and Jessica Brumit at No. 5 singles, which Buttner edged out in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
“It was another tough loss,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “To lose both yesterday and today by such a close score and for both matches to be decided in a 6-4 final set shows we are right there against these top teams. We just need to get over that last hurdle.”
The first close decision of the day was in doubles, where Oregon won at No. 1 and ETSU won at No. 3, setting up the deciding match on court two. ETSU’s usual top duo of freshmen Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) squared off with Sofia Hager and Julia Metzger and the Ducks’ tandem pulled out the set, 8-5.
ETSU senior Antonia Kolvou (Larisa, Greece) kept her winning streak alive and ensured the Lady Bucs of a point in the top singles match, defeating Patricia Skowronski in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Coupled with wins by Choo and junior newcomer Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco), the Lady Bucs climbed their way to three points.
Losses by Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) and Gerbasi at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, pulled the match to 3-3, setting up Brumit’s and Buttner’s dual on court five. The deciding match was the only of the day to go three sets, which ended in heartbreak for the Buccaneers.
ETSU will look to get back on the winning track next Friday, heading an hour south of Johnson City to Asheville, N.C., to take on the Bulldogs. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
