DELAND, Fla. (March 28, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team and Stetson faced off in a battle of the Atlantic Sun’s top teams and the Lady Bucs came out on top, 7-0, Thursday from the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
After fighting out a tough doubles point, ETSU (8-4, 3-0 A-Sun) rolled in singles and won all six points – five in straight sets. Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) battled for the top match and prevailed against Andrea Crespo in a third-set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to give the Lady Buccaneers a clean sweep.
“The doubles was a little shaky and there are some areas where we’re not quite settled, but we have a hard-working group,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. "Coach Sandlant has them all under one concept.
“There are a lot of new girls and they’ve gotten to understand one another and fight for each other on the court. It showed in singles where we dominated.”
Kolovou’s victory at No. 1 moves her record at the position to 8-1. The first-year Buc is 18-9 overall, 10-1 dual.
“Antonia worked like an animal to pull out a great win,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “This was a big win today.”
Juniors Sofia Espana (Mexico City) and Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) sparked the big performance. After ETSU won at No. 1 doubles with Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) extending their winning streak to seven, Stetson (9-6, 4-1 A-Sun) won at No. 2 to force the No. 3 duos to decide the point. Espana and Andreazza answered the call, defeating Eveline Lepinay and Lindsey Cable, 8-5.
It was all Lady Bucs from there. Espana got singles off to a good start, 6-2, 6-0, over Alexandra Lyubimova, and Choo improved to 24-7, 11-1, dual with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Diana Bukajeva. Gerbasi took the clincher, battling for a first-set tiebreak and disposing of Jen Miller 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Junior Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) defeated Lepinay a short while later, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and Andreazza downed Lazarevic, 6-2, 6-4, before Kolovou put the finishing touches on the day.
ETSU looks to remain atop the conference on Saturday when it faces another undefeated squad in Florida Gulf Coast. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m., from the FGCU Tennis Complex.
