One of 11 A-Sun softball honorees
MACON, Ga. (May 7, 2013) – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its postseason softball honors and awards on Tuesday, naming ETSU junior Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) to its Academic All-Conference Team.
The A-Sun introduced the Academic All-Conference list two years ago to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
Baird became the second Buccaneer in as many years to receive the honor on Tuesday – Annie Martin in 2012. The junior third baseman played and started in all 47 games this season, leading ETSU in total bases (62), RBIs (25), doubles (9), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.443) and on-base percentage (.348). Adding to her athletic accomplishments, she became the first Buccaneer since 2009 to be named A-Sun Player of the Week following ETSU’s impressive performance at the College of Charleston Classic in mid-February.
To be honored on the A-Sun Academic All-Conference list, Baird had to put up stellar numbers in the classroom as well. The third-year Buccaneer did just that, excelling to the tune of a 3.75 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science.
The A-Sun Academic All-Conference Team is compiled of 11 of the league’s true student-athletes. One is given the top honor of being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which was awarded to Mercer’s Sarah Santana.
