CONWAY, S.C. (Nov. 21, 2013) - Despite holding the nation's seventh-ranked offense scoreless in the second half of play, the Atlantic Sun Champion ETSU men's soccer team fell short on the road, losing, 2-0, at No. 11 Coastal Carolina Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The setback brought an end to the Buccaneers' (10-6-4) record-breaking season. ETSU set multiple program and conference records en route to winning its second Atlantic Sun Championship in four years.
Two first-half CCU goals were too much for ETSU to overcome. With the win, the Chanticleers (18-4-0) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will play Charlotte Sunday, Nov. 24.
Sergio Camargo gave CCU an early 1-0 lead with a 17th-minute goal. Jakub Stourac came off the bench to add to the Chanticleers' lead, scoring in the 32nd minute off an assist from Pedro Ribeiro.
The Bucs battled back in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities including two solid strikes by freshman Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) and a header chance by junior Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France).
ETSU and CCU each recoreded six shots in the second half, while the Chanticleers maintained a 17-11 shots advantage overall.
The tournament appearance was the second in ETSU's short six-year program history. The Bucs also clinched a postseason berth in 2010 following the program's first Atlantic Sun Championship.
This season, ETSU set Atlantic Sun team and individual records by earning 10 shutouts, with senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) getting each result.
Coulter also became the conference's all-time leader for career shutouts with 25.
The Bucs will graduate nine seniors from this season's squad. Over the past four years, ETSU has compiled a record of 45-25-12, making the outgoing class the winningest class in program history.
