EL PASO, Texas (Nov. 25, 2013) – ETSU junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) wrapped up day one of the Sun Bowl Western Refining All-America Golf Classic on Monday from the El Paso Country Club.
Playing among the top collegiate golfers, Pugh finished the first 36 holes at 3-over-par 145 and is tied with California’s Michael Weaver for 19th.
Pugh, the 10th Buccaneer golfer to play in the top collegiate tournament, carded a 2-over 73 in round one, while wrapping up the day with a 1-over 72. The Welshman was 1-under thru 16 holes in the second round, but bogeyed the final two holes to post his 72.
Cory Whitsett from Alabama leads the 21-player field at 8-under 134. The 2011 champion holds a two-shot lead over Tyler Dunlap (Texas A&M), Jonathan Garrick (UCLA) and Gavin Green (New Mexico).
Pugh joins a list of former Bucs to be a part of the elite group to play in this tournament – Skeeter Heath (1975-76), Alan Strange (1976), Rex Kuramoto (1989), Bobby Gage (1989), Garrett Willis (1994-95), David Christensen (1998), Chris Wisler (1999), Rhys Davies (2004-05), and Gareth Shaw (2007).
Pugh is grouped with Weaver and Georgia State’s J.J. Grey in Tuesday’s final round. The threesome tee off at 9:38 a.m. Eastern. Live scoring is available by following along on Golfstat.
