OXFORD, Miss. (April 4, 2014) – The ETSU women’s golf team placed three players in the Top 15 individually and posted a first round score of 4-over-par 292 to finish tied for second place following the opening day of play Friday in the Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
Junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) led the way for the No. 43-ranked Buccaneers, as she carded a 1-under-par 71 and finished tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, teammates Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) and Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) fired rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, as Lopez finished tied for 11th and Chin is currently tied for 15th.
As a team, the Bucs are tied for second with Coastal Carolina, and both teams are six strokes back of team-leading GRU Augusta. ETSU is ahead of teams such as No. 27 Kentucky, No. 33 Tulane, No. 44 Notre Dame, and unranked programs such as Tennessee, Furman and Ole Miss.
“Today was a solid round and I’m very proud of the effort,” said ETSU assistant coach Lauren Stratton, who is on the road with the team as head coach Stefanie Shelton is on maternity leave. “I’m confident that the girls will bring it tomorrow. It will be a tough day, but we are in a good position.”
The Bucs will wrap up action in the Rebel Intercollegiate with 36 holes of play on Saturday and fans can keep up to date with the latest scores by visiting Golfstat.com. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2013-14 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
