MACON, Ga. (April 30, 2014) – A day after being named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun, ETSU junior golfer Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) landed A-Sun All-Academic honors as it was released by the league office on Wednesday.
Pugh, a sport management major, has a recorded a 3.403 cumulative grade-point-average, while also leading the Bucs with six top-10 finishes in 2013-14. The Welshman is also a five-time Buccaneer Honor Roll member (3.0+ GPA each semester) and was selected A-Sun All-Academic in each of his first three seasons.
In addition to his six top-10 finishes, Pugh led ETSU in stroke average (72.73), had a team-best 11 sub-par rounds, while also ranking 33rd nationally with five eagles and 58th with 106 birdies. Pugh also played in the Sun Bowl Western Refining All-America Golf Classic, which is considered “The No. 1 tournament in collegiate golf,” and shot a 2-over-par 215 (73-72-70). Pugh’s top finish came at the General Hackler Championship where he placed fourth at 2-over-par 218 (73-70-75) and registered his lowest round of the year with a 66 in the opening round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Kennesaw State’s Jimmy Beck was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while teammate Austin Vick, James Beale (Mercer) and Michael Schmidt (Northern Kentucky) joined Pugh on the all-academic team.
The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
