Rice, Devine fuel offensive attack in comeback win
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Sept. 10, 2013) - The ETSU volleyball team spoiled Marshall’s home opener Tuesday night as the Bucs rallied their way to a five-set (25-20, 24-26, 25-27, 25-23, 15-10) non-conference victory over the Thundering Herd inside the Cam Henderson Center.
In a match that saw both teams combine for 35 ties and 15 lead changes, it was a pair of veterans who stepped up to lead the offensive attack for the Blue and Gold. Senior Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) collected her fifth double-double in eight matches, finishing with a match-high 22 kills and 14 digs, while junior Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) added a season-high 19 kills. Devine hit a season best .358 (22-3-53) and Rice recorded a .342 (19-5-39) clip.
Once again, junior Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) was solid at the net by ending the night with 12 kills and seven blocks, while fellow junior Katie Muey (Alexandria, Ind.) led all players with 17 digs. Meanwhile, junior setter Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) tallied 44 assists, four digs, four blocks and three kills, and freshman setter Kristen Favre (Plano, Texas) pitched in with 12 assists and three digs in the comeback win.
“I am proud the team did not let this opportunity go by, as we battled to the very end for the win,” said head coach Lindsey Devine. “Both Megan and Ivey had a great night at the net and came up with big swings. In the fifth set, Jamie and both middles were key in getting some touches on the block. I also loved Katie's presence the entire night.”
Overall, the Bucs won the battle in kills (67-64), digs (59-50), blocks (11-9) and service aces (8-7), while also registering seven fewer attack errors than the Thundering Herd, 21 to 28.
Following the win, ETSU snapped its two-game losing skid and moved to 4-4, while Marshall dipped to 2-7.
The Bucs return to action on Thursday when ETSU makes the trek to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. The Blue and Gold open the three-day, four-match tournament with a familiar foe in VCU Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Rams defeated ETSU in five sets last Saturday in Lexington.
