Sunday, April 09, 2000

Johnson City, Tenn. - VMI's Chris Catanzaro went 4-8 with four RBIs and four runs scored to lead the Keydets in a doubleheader sweep over ETSU (5-4, 9-4) at ETSU's Cardinal Park.

Catanzaro hit one home run and stroked three doubles, setting a VMI record with 50 career doubles, in the two games. In the first game, ETSU's Matt Baber pitched his third consecutive complete game, but fell to 5-6 on the season in the Bucs' 5-4 loss.

VMI began the opening game with a run in the top of the first. Michael Goldman singled home Catanzaro who had doubled off Baber. The Bucs took a 2-1 lead in the second. Nathan Copeland led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a base hit by Ryan McKinney. Copeland scored on a wild pitch and McKinney came home on a single by Matt Nunley.

The Bucs increased their lead to 4-1 when Copeland belted a two-run shot in the third. The Keydets cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fifth when Eric Walker delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field. VMI tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Ed Pearson that plated Ryan Colvin.

The visitors took a 5-4 lead in the eighth. Catanzaro led off the frame with a double down the right-field line, advanced to third on a bunt and scored when Baber's pick-off attempt eluded McKinney at third base. Jeremy Harper (1-0) picked up the win while Ian Ostlund pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

VMI opened the second game with one in the top of the first when Catanzaro belted a home run over the right-field wall. The Bucs got a run in the bottom of the first before VMI struck for two in the second. With two outs, Rob Riley walked and scored on Jon Schott's triple. Ryan Colvin followed with an RBI single to give the Keydets a 3-1 lead.

The Keydets finished off the Bucs with six runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run double from Catanzaro. In the home half of the fourth, ETSU scored two runs on four singles to finalize the score, 9-4, in a seven-inning contest. Jeremy Terry went 4-4 with two runs scored and one RBI to lead the Buccaneer offense.

VMI's Ostlund pitched a complete game, scattering 11 hits to improve to 8-2 on the season. Buc starter Terry Johnson (1-1) lasted 3.1 innings before giving way to Jackson Simerly and finally Jarrod Hyder. Hyder pitched 3.0 innings, striking out six and retiring the last seven batters he faced.

ETSU will return to action at 3 p.m. on April 12 when the Bucs travel to UNC Asheville.
