Sunday, March 19, 2000
Johnson City, Tenn. - East Tennessee State senior Shannon Carter went 2-4 with two RBIs and earned his first victory on the mound to lead the Bucs in an 8-5 win over the College of Charleston at ETSU's Cardinal Park.
Carter pitched 7.1 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing five runs, to improve to 1-2 on the year. At the plate, he delivered a two-run single to cap off a four-run seventh that propelled the Bucs (6-11, 4-5 Southern Conference) to their third consecutive win and a three-game series sweep of the College of Charleston (10-12-1, 5-3-1 SoCon).
ETSU opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Carter scored the second run on a single by senior Chuck Dewald. Dewald went 3-4 on the day with one RBI and one run scored. Charleston responded with three runs in the top of the third. Karl Morris (1-4, one RBI, one run scored) doubled in Brett Spivey to get the Cougars on the board.
The Bucs scored two in the bottom of the third before Charleston knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth. Spivey's first home run of the season gave Charleston a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh before ETSU manufactured four runs in the home-half of the inning.
Sophomore Jeremy Terry and freshman Chad Boruff both stroked two hits for the Bucs. Sophomore Jackson Simerly hurled the final 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs, to earn his second save of the season.
