Softball Drops Doubleheader At Radford
Thursday, April 26, 2001RADFORD, Va. - The Radford University softball team defeated East Tennessee State, 4-2 and 8-5, to sweep a doubleheader in non-conference softball action Thursday afternoon at the Dedmon Center Park.
The two wins improve Radford's overall record to 20-32-1. East Tennessee State drops to 11-33 on the season.
In game one, Radford opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third on a two- out, two-run homerun by senior Shelly Guy, to make it 2-0 Highlanders. East Tennessee State scored in the top of the fourth and fifth innings for their only two runs, as Melanie Collins and Tiffany Vandergriff each had an RBI.
Radford would tack on two more runs for insurance as Hallie East singled home Kelly Hartzog in the fourth and Donita Brady scored on a sacrifice by Payton Nash in the fifth.
Deana Benner pitched a gem for the Highlanders, as she went the distance allowing two runs, while striking out 12. The Highlanders were led offensively by Shelly Guy who went 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI's.
Bucs starter Tiffany Vandergriff picked up the loss allowing four runs. Vandergriff had a 1-for-3 performance at the plate with an RBI to lead ETSU.
In the nightcap, Shelly Guy hit a two-run homerun in the sixth to give Radford some insurance runs to hold off the Bucs, 8-5.
Radford opened the game scoring three in the first, as Payton Nash had an RBI double and Kelly Hartzog had a double, collecting two RBI's, to make it 3-0 Radford. Radford would tack on three more runs in the fourth.
East Tennessee State rallied late to score two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, to close the lead to 6-5. Radford starter Jennifer Overstreet was able to finish strong pitching a complete game, giving up one earned run and striking out two.
Shelly Guy had a 2-for3 performance with a homerun, three runs scored, and two RBI's to lead Radford. ETSU was led by Jessica Hodge who went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.
Radford will next travel to Lynchburg, VA on Saturday to face the Liberty Flames in a key Big South conference matchup.
