East Tennessee State Mens Tennis Sweeps Appalachian State in the First Round of the Southern Conference Championships

Johnson City, Tenn. - The East Tennessee State mens tennis team did not drop a set in defeating Appalachian State 4-0 in first-round play of the Southern Conference Mens Tennis Championships in Charleston, S.C.

No. 3 seeded ETSU won singles matches at No. 1, 2 and 3 from No. 6 seeded Appalachian State. The Buccaneers also won doubles matches at No. 1 and 2. No other matches were completed.

ETSU senior Gustavo Gomez defeated Dan Holman 6-0, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. Gomezs win was his 24th in his last 25 matches. Marcos Pavlovich defeated Appalachian States Craig Rice at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, ETSUs Juan Yannuzzi downed Doug Ormsby, 6-2, 6-3. Yannuzzis win was his 20th in his last 21 matches. Matches including Pablo Sahagun, Roberto Fernandez and Francisco Diaz were not completed.

The Buccaneers took both doubles matches that were completed. ETSUs Gomez and Fernandez defeated Holman and Rice at No. 1 singles, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Pavlovich and Yannuzzi downed D. Ormsby and Shuster, 8-4. Sahagun and Diazs match at No. 3 doubles against R. Ormsby and Hauchman was halted at 6-5 with the ETSU tandem in the lead.

"This is a good start for our team," said Buccaneer head coach Dave Mullins. "Our singles and doubles teams played solid, we got through the match without losing a set. That is good for our momentum."

The win runs ETSUs record to 12-11 on the season. The Buccaneers play UNC Greensboro Saturday at 3 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Southern Conference Mens Tennis Championships from Charleston, S.C. The Spartans handed the Buccaneers one of their two conference losses on the season, 4-3 on Mar. 24. "We look forward to a rematch with UNCG," said Mullins. "We have many guys looking to get a second chance at them."
