Sunday, April 01, 2001
Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State could not overcome three singles wins by Brown University to drop a non-conference match, 4-2 this afternoon from Charleston, S.C.
Two matches that the Bucs were leading were not finished because of inclement weather. At No. 3 singles, Pablo Sahagun was leading when rain forced his match with Alex Walden to be halted. Sahagun and David Poole were also leading at No. 3 doubles when rain washed away their match.
At No. 1 doubles, Gustavo Gomez propelled his winning streak to 19 straight matches, as he handily defeated Chris Wolfe 6-0,6-0. Juan Yannuzzi also helped the Bucs cause as he defeated Nick Malone 6-4,6-1 at No. 2 singles. Chris Drake put Brown on the board as he defeated Roberto Fernandez at No. 4 singles 6-0,5-7,6-2. Antonio Bugge dropped his No. 5 singles match to Ben Brier 6-0,6-2. No. 6 singles saw Francisco Diaz come up short against Kris Goddard, losing by a count of 6-2,6-4.
Brown earned the doubles point with Malone and Jamie Cerretani taking the No.1 doubles match over Gomez and Fernandez 8-3. No. 2 doubles also saw a Brown victory as Wolf and Drake defeated Yannuzzi and Diaz 8-5.
The loss drops the Bucs to 8-9 on the year. The Bucs will get back into Southern Confernce competition by hosting the College of Charleston on April. 8 at the ETSU Tennis Center.
