Men's Tennis Falls to Wake Forest
Saturday, March 24, 2001 Johnson City, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State University mens tennis team fell to the 32nd-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 6-1 Friday evening from Winston-Salem, N.C. The mens squad (5-6, 2-0 SoCon) started out with a victory as senior Gustavo Gomez won his 10th consecutive match 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Raul Munoz. Wake Forest gained the momentum as they won the next five singles matches. David Loewenthal defeated Marcos Pavlovich at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Roberto Fernandez fell to Mike Murray, 6-3, 6-0. David Bere defeated Pablo Sahagun at No. 4 singles, 6-1,7-6. Trent Brendon won a three-set match against Juan Yannuzzi at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. In the final singles match, Justin Kaufmann defeated ETSUs Anthony Bugge, 6-3, 6-1. Wake Forest claimed the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. ETSUs Gomez and Fernandez took the first doubles match over Murray and Bere of Wake Forest, 8-4. Yannuzzi and Pavlovich fell to Munoz and Loewenthal, 8-3. Sahagun and Poole were defeated by Poole and Sahagun in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (4). The ETSU men return to action on Saturday, March 24 at 10 a.m., trying to keep their SoCon record perfect as they travel to UNC Greensboro. |
