Baseball's Andy Baxter Selected in Major League Baseball Draft

Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State University's Andy Baxter (Erwin, Tenn.) was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 32nd round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft on June 6. He was the 967th overall pick. After playing his first three seasons at North Carolina State, Baxter transferred to ETSU for a stellar senior campaign. The All-Southern Conference honoree led the team and ranked second in the Southern Conference with a .394 batting average. He was one of only three Buccaneers to start all 55 games. A 6-4, 210 first baseman, Baxter set ETSU's all-time single season record in hits (87) and doubles (25) during the 2001 season. He compiled a 15-game hit streak and hit .538 (7-13) in his final three collegiate games. "I am very excited and proud of Andy," head coach Tony Skole said. "This is a great testament to his hard work and dedication to baseball. We wish him the best of luck and the entire ETSU baseball family will now be Cleveland Indian fans." Baxter will join two former Buccaneers in the minor league ranks. Right-hander Matt Baber is 1-0 after pitching six scoreless innings and striking out five in his only outing for the Canton Crocodiles. Outfielder Rusty Swackhamer is batting .308 (4-13) with a double and three runs scored after playing four games for the Chillicothe Paints. Both Canton and Chillicothe are teams in the independent Frontier League.
