Volleyball Prepares for Pivotal Weekend Matches

Thursday, November 02, 2000

Johnson City, Tenn.-- In conjunction with homecoming weekend at East Tennessee State University, the Buccaneer volleyball team will face-off against two Southern Conference foes at home in Brooks Gym.

The Bucs (13-10, 9-6) are coming off of a tough 3-1 loss (4-15, 13-15, 20-18, 10-15) Tuesday night at Virginia Tech. The Buccaneers were led by freshman outside hitter Rachel Shifflet with 20 kills and senior outside hitter Courtney Sussillo who registered 18 kills of her own. The match also marked the return of junior setter Carey Cavanaugh, currently ninth in the Southern Conference in assists per game (9.30), from a knee injury. Cavanaugh came into the match in the second game and truly rose to the occasion, leading the Bucs with 51 assists and 18 digs in just three games.

The Buccaneers will be looking to snap a season-long three-game losing streak when they face The Citadel Bulldogs at 7:00 Friday evening from Brooks Gym. The Bulldogs (3-21, 0-13) are having a tough year, competing in the Southern Conference for just their second year in volleyball. The last time the Bucs faced the Bulldogs, ETSU came away with a 3-0 (15-5, 15-5, 15-10) victory in Charleston, S.C. on September 29. The Bucs were led in that match by Sussillo with 10 kills and Cavanaugh who registered 24 assists. ETSU has a 4-0 all-time record versus The Citadel, having never dropped a game to the Bulldogs.

On Saturday at noon, ETSU will match-up against the College of Charleston Cougars (12-10, 6-7). The last time that the Bucs faced the Cougars, ETSU was victorious, 3-0 (15-11, 15-12, 15-6), on September 30 in Charleston, S.C. Sussillo again led the charge for the Bucs, tying with senior middle hitter Jena Policastro for the team lead in kills with eight. Cavanaugh also had a stellar game for ETSU, leading the team with 28 assists and 11 digs. The Buccaneers have won the last four matches against the Cougars and hold a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series between the teams.

The Buccaneers are currently in fifth in the SoCon standings, jockeying for tournament position with Western Carolina (13-12, 10-5) and Appalachian State (12-14, 9-6), with the three teams separated in the standings by a mere game.
