Friday, October 06, 2000

Senior Becky Moore and freshman Jamie Hedin each finished in double figures in kills to help UNCG break a five-match losing streak with an upset of East Tennessee State, 3-2, in Southern Conference volleyball action Oct. 6 in Fleming Gym.

The Spartans won by scores of 15-9, 15-13, 10-15, 15-13, and 16-14 over the Buccaneers, who entered tonight on a seven-match winning streak and were tied for first in the conference.

UNCG began the match strong, taking a 10-2 lead in the first game. ETSU closed within 12-6, but UNCG held out for a 15-9 victory. In the second game, UNCG held a 10-6 lead before a Buccaneer rally gave ETSU a 12-10 lead. The Spartans responded with four unanswered points of their own, and holding a 14-12 lead, took the second game on an ace by Moore, one of a game-high five for Moore on the night.

The momentum shifted to ETSU in the third game, as it scored the first three points, and held a 7-2 lead. The Spartans closed within 8-6, but the Bucs scored six of the next seven points for a 14-7 lead, and held on for a 15-10 win.

ETSU held an early 9-4 lead in the fourth game, and led 11-7. UNCG answered with six straight points for a 13-11 lead, but the Bucs scored the last four points of the game for a 15-13 victory.

The Spartans never trailed in the fifth game, as they scored the first three points of the game. ETSU tied the game at 9-9, and the game was tied four more times until Hedin's kill at 15-14 gave UNCG the game and the match.

Rachel Shifflet led ETSU with 15 kills and seven digs, while Amber Ciskowski added 14 kills and 12 digs.

UNCG improves to 5-13 and 3-5 in the SoCon, while ETSU falls to 9-5 and 6-2 in the conference.
