Murray State Races Past Bucs, Win 4-3

Sept 24, 2000-- The Murray State women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a close, hard-fought 4-3 win over visiting East Tennessee State this afternoon.

The Racers (6-4) had a 3-0 lead with two minutes in the second half and had a 4-1 advantage with 65:38 elapsed, but the Buccaneers (5-4) were able to rally, scoring two goals within the last 14 minutes and threatening to tie the game in the waning seconds.

Sophomore midfielder Christine Brannen put Murray State on the scoreboard with her first career goal, a 15-foot shot from the left on the goal with 28:52 elapsed.

Sophomore forward Brooke Royer added to the Racer lead with her second goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Lauren McAdams with 34:47 elapsed. The assist was the eighth of the season for McAdams, and MSU led at halftime 2-0.

Murray State struck early in the second half when freshman midfielder Emily Schaller put in her third goal of the season on a cross pass from McAdams with 47:11 elapsed, giving the Racers a 3-0 lead.

East Tennessee State finally hit the scoreboard when junior midfielder Courtney Edde picked up her second goal of the season on a long kick from 25 yards out and over the head of MSU goalkeeper Geri Thompson to cut the lead to 3-1 with 62:47 elapsed.

Murray State's final goal of the game came with 65:38 elapsed when junior midfielder Julia Travis took downfield passes from freshman defender Shauna Kline and freshman forward Jackie Thomas in front of the goal and booted it in for her fourth goal of the season.

The Buccaneers battled back, with freshman midfielder Andrea Brown scoring her first goal of the season on a direct kick from 20 yards out and to the right with 76:21 elapsed.

ETSU scored again seven minutes later when junior Kristin Redfern put in her fourth goal of the season on a cross pass from Brown with 83:57 elapsed to cut Murray State's lead to 4-3.

The Bucs had the ball on the MSU side of the field for the remainder of the game, but were turned away by the Racer defense.

East Tennessee State will return to action when they host Southern Conference rival Appalachian State on Thursday Sept. 28. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Libery Bell Soccer Complex.
