Blue Defeats Gold 17-12 in Annual East Tennessee State Blue-Gold Scrimmage

Johnson City, Tenn. -- Quarterbacks Matt Wilhjelm and Jatavis Sanders played almost flawlessly and Tim Turner had a huge game as the Blue squad defeated the Gold squad 17-12 in the annual ETSU Blue-Gold scrimmage Saturday afternoon from Memorial Center. The Blue squad took an early 7-0 lead as running back Corey Carter scored on a three-yard run with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter. With 5:09 left in the seqond stanza, Turner hauled in a 59-yard strike from Sanders to give the Blue squad a 14-0 cushion. Following a Kareem Coffin fumble recovery, kicker Wes Sands connected on a 43-yard field goal to give the Blue team a 17-0 advantage heading into halftime. The Gold team would make a comeback in the second half, led by former ETSU quarterback and current tight ends coach Jamey Chadwell. With :22 remaining in the third quarter, reciever Michael Mabe got behind the secondary and Chadwell hit him with a 80-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed, but the Gold taem was on the scoreboard, trailing 17-6. Running back LaShawn Taylor scored on an 11-yard dash with 4:39 remaining in the game to bring the Gold team within five at 17-12. However, the two-point conversion was missed, and the Blue team was able to hold on for the victory. For the Blue team, Wilhjelm completed 12 of 18 passes for 124 yards while Sanders completed eight of 10 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown. Chadwell was 7-23 with 143 yards and one interception. Turner hauled in 11 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown for the Blue squad. Mabe led the Gold squad with two receptions for 118 yards. Fullbacks Nick Spearman and Scott Carter carried the ball well for the Blue squad, Spearman with eight carries for 49 yards and Carter with seven carries for 48 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Andrew Simmons led the way for the Blue squad with five tackles and a sack. Tony Tiller also had a tackle and an interception fo the Blue team. Dusty Bryant led the Gold team with 10 tackles, while Terrance Smith added a game-high three sacks. The annual scrimmage is a tune-up for the ETSU season which begins Saturday, September 1 at the University of Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. Passing: BLUE -- Matt Wilhjelm 12-18, 124 yards; Jatavis Sanders 8-10, 126 yards, 1 TD.
