Wednesday, May 01, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (May 1, 2002) -- East Tennessee State women's golf head coach Katie Weiss Wednesday announced the signing of two high school golfers that will join the Buccaneer program for the 2002-03 season. The first signee is Ashley Barton (Seffner, Fla.) from Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla. Ashley was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Wyatt at Armwood. She was named as the team's most dedicated player in 1999, and the team Most Valuable Player in 2001 and 2002. She holds the lowest scoring average in school history and was the first person to reach the state tournament from the school. Ashley was a member of the All-Western Conference team on two occasions and was in the top-10 in scoring average in the conference twice. Barton was the champion of the 2001 Epix Invitational Junior Classic. Ashley attended the same high school as ETSU freshman men's golfer Jeremy Hobson (Thonotasassa, Fla.). Kailey Brooks (Bracebridge, Ontario) comes to the Buccaneers from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School in Bracebridge, Ontario. Kailey was the 2001 Bracebridge Athlete of the Year and was named a College Prospect of America in 1998. Brooks was a Pepsi Future Masters Champion in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Kailey also played basketball at Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes. "We are very pleased with our 2002-03 class," said Weiss. "We are replacing three seniors with talented players that will make an immediate impact to our program.
