No. 67 East Tennessee State Men's Tennis Tops Wofford, 5-2

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 5, 2002) -- The No. 67-ranked East Tennessee State men's tennis team remained undefeated in conference play by defeating Wofford, 5-2, Friday afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and senior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated the Wofford team of Lee Porter and Brandon Smith at No. 1 singles 8-4. Sophomore Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) and Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Aregentina) of ETSU were victorious over Terriers Dial Burwell and Edward Moseley at No. 2 doubles, 9-8. ETSU freshman Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) and Franciso Diaz (Weston, Fla.) defeated Brett Johnson and Jason Mengel of Wofford at No. 3 doubles, 8-4. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich defeated Wofford's Smith, 6-4, 6-3. Buccaneer Fernandez was victorious over Johnson at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Wofford's Lee Porter defeated ETSU's Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mexico), 6-3, 6-0. ETSU's Salazar defeated Burwell at No. 4 singles to decide the match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) was victorious over Wofford's Mengel, 6-2, 6-4. Wofford's Alec Wilson defeated ETSU's Ochoa in a tight match 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 7 singles. The win marks ETSU's fourth straight and runs its record to 11-6, 6-0 in Southern Conference play. "We played well enough to win, but it wasn't pretty. Maybe we underestimated Wofford a little, but they battled well," said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins. "Our guys are doing what it takes to win. Hopefully we will be sharper Sunday and ready for Georgia Southern." The Bucs return to action on Sunday, Apr. 7 at 2:00 p.m. against Georgia Southern from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
