No. 59 Men's Tennis Defeats Charlotte, 4-3

Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 30, 2002) -- The No. 59-ranked East Tennessee State men's tennis team won their second-straight match, defeating Charlotte, 4-3, Saturday afternoon from the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C. The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and senior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated the Charlotte team of Ola Jonsson and Joakim Petersson at No. 1 singles, 8-4. Junior Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and sophomore Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Mexico) of ETSU were victorious over 49ers Jonathan McGovern and Marlo Santoso at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. ETSU sophomores Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) defeated Jacob Nordwall and Jess Rutledge of Charlotte at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. ETSU won the match by taking three of six singles matches. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich fell to Charlotte's Jonsson, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2. Fernandez fell to Charlotte's Nordwall at No. 2 singles in a close match, 7-6, 7-6. At No. 3 singles, ETSU got their first singles point as Iglesias defeated Charlotte's Petersson, 6-3, 6-2. ETSU kept their momentum going, as they won the next two singles matches. ETSU's Sahagun defeated McGovern of the 49ers at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Salazar was victorious over Charlotte's David Bolin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Charlotte ended the match by winning the point at No. 6 singles, as Jonathan Clark defeated ETSU's Serrano, 7-6, 4-6, 10-8. The win runs ETSU's record to 9-6 on the season. Charlotte falls to 2-12. "We turned in a great overall effort today," said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins. "We lost some tough matches, but we had some good doubles wins, giving us the momentum early. It is good to have some momentum going into our last Southern Conference matches." The Bucs return to action on April 2 at 2:30 p.m. against Appalachian State from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City. Singles matches: No. 1: Ola Jonsson (Charlotte) def.
