Wofford Shuts Out Women's Tennis

Johnson City, Tenn. (March 10, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-6, 0-1 SoCon) dropped their first Southern Conference match, 7-0, to the Wofford Lady Terriers (5-5, 2-0 SoCon) on a cold Sunday afternoon. In the doubles competition, Tatiana Arriarian (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) lost to Wofford's Wendy Rohr and Lauren Marie Whisenhunt, 8-1. The Bucs' lone win of the day came when Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla) defeated Delaine Hare and Meghan Turner,8-6. The Lady Terriers swept the Bucs in the singles matches. In the No. 1 spot, Irey lost to Rohr in straight sets, 6-2and 6-0. Whisenhunt defeated Halim, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 2 position. Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) lost in a very competitive match to Hare by the scores of 7-6 and 6-0. Arriaran lost in the No. 4 match to Turner, 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 5 position, Villavicencio lost to DeBerry 6-3 and 6-2. The Lady Bucs will travel over Spring Break to Charleston to play North Carolina State on Tuesday, March 12th at 11 am. They will also compete against Indiana State, College of Charleston, and Virginia Tech during the next week. Wofford 7, ETSU 0 Doubles: 1) Rohr/Whisenhunt (W) def.
