Women's Tennis Loses to Gardner Webb, 6-1

Boiling Springs, N. C. (February 24, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-2) was defeated by the Gardner Webb Bulldogs (3-4) Saturday afternoon 6-1 at Gardner Webb University. ETSU would get one point in the singles competition. In the No. 1 spot, Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) lost to GWU's Courtney McInnis 6-2, 6-4. In the only win for the Bucs came when Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) downed Molly Haeffner in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2. Liza Handzus defeated Tatiana Arrarian (Cochabamba, Bolivia) 6-4 and 6-3. Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) lost to GWU's Brandy Borders in three tough sets (6-7, 6-2, 10-6). Mellissa DeJong defeated Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.), 6-2 and 6-1. In the No. 6 position, Elena Itcheva shut out Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N. C.) in two sets. The Bulldogs swept the doubles competition with the scores 9-8, 8-6 and 8-0.
