Wednesday, April 03, 2002

Knoxville, Tenn. (Apr. 3, 2002) -Walter Sevilla went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple as the Tennessee Volunteers won their seventh consecutive non-conference game with a 6-1 victory over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Brian St. Jean (2-1), who picked up the win in his second start, gave the Bucs their only run in the second when he issued four walks, the last coming with the bases loaded. He went on to work seven innings, giving up five hits while striking out five. The loss was the seventh consecutive for East Tennessee State which fell to 7-19. Brandon Cross (Bluff City, Tenn.) had two of the Bucs five hits. Tennessee (15-17) drew first blood in the bottom of the first as it grabbed a 2-0 lead on a Sevilla double that plated Nick Crowe who led off with a first-pitch single. Sevilla moved to third on a ground out and later scored on a passed ball. ETSU answered with its run in the top of the second. Bryan Crouse (Kingston, Tenn.) led off the inning by drawing a walk. Crouse moved to third on a sacrifice and a goundout before St. Jean had trouble finding the stike zone. He walked the next two Bucs to load the bases and then issued another free pass to Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) to force home Crouse with the Bucs' run. The Vols padded their lead to 4-1 in the sixth as Sevilla led off with a triple and scored on Matt Sternberg's sacrifice bunt. Hal Bibee, who also had two hits, then doubled over the center fielder's head and plated the fourth run on Chad LeGate's bloop single to right. Two more insurance runs in the eighth on a Dennis Gomez single and the second Buc error made the final 6-1. Matt Hensley (Powell, Tenn.) (0-2) took the loss as he was lifted after three innings. Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) was touched for two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings, while Trevor Smith (Newport, Tenn.) tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings. Donnie Sharp (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) worked the eighth, giving up the final two runs.
