ETSU Takes Baseball Series Against Indiana With 8-4 Win

Sunday, March 03, 2002

Kingsport, Tenn. (March 3, 2002) - East Tennessee State took and early lead and got some strong pitching from Trevor Smith (Newport, Tenn.) as the Bucs took an 8-4 win over Indiana at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport. The win gave ETSU (5-4) a 2-1 win in the three-game series with the Hoosiers. Indiana (3-2) got on the board with single runs in each of the first two innings to start the game, scoring both runs without the benefit of a hit off ETSU starter Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.). Two walks and an error loaded the bases in the first for the Hoosiers, who got a sac fly from Vasili Spanos to plate the first run of the game. In the second Indiana again loaded the bases, this time on three walks, scoring another run on a fielder's choice grounder by Mark Calkins. East Tennessee State got one back in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Ryan Hyder (Erwin, Tenn.) and then took the lead for good with a three-run third. With runners on second and third and one out, Kirk Keithley (Peoria, Ill.) and Michael Giroud (St. Petersburg, Fla.) came up with consecutive run scoring singles. The Bucs then picked up another run when Keithley and Giroud pulled off a double steal, with Keithley scoring when the catcher's throw to third sailed into left field. ETSU then put the game away with four runs in the fifth. The Bucs put runners at second and third with one out, setting up Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.), who delivered both runners with a single to right. With two outs Traylor stole second and Bryan Crouse (Kingston, Tenn.) and Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) walked to load the bases. Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) then laced a single to left that scored Traylor and Crouse to push the Bucs lead to 8-3. Smith came on in the second for Turner and threw 6.1 innings, allowing just four hits and one run to record his first collegiate victory. Zach Otte started and took the loss for Indiana, lasting just three innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits. Keithley led ETSU's offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Traylor and Moore each drove in a pair of runs for the Bucs. Nick Evans had a pair of hits in five trips to lead Indiana. East Tennessee state will be on the road for its next game, taking on nationally ranked Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at 4:00 p.m.
