Friday, October 12, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State volleyball team tied a school-record with their 10th consecutive victory as the Bucs defeated the Chattanooga Lady Mocs 3-1 (26-30, 30-13, 30-25, 30-24) Friday night from Brooks Gym in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs have tied the 1987 squad that won 10 games to start the season. With the win, the Bucs move to 13-1, their best start to a season in school history. That 1987 team started the season with a 12-1 record. The Bucs (13-1, 9-1 SoCon) lost their first game in five matches as Chattanooga (10-7, 3-6) took game one 30-26. ETSU began the game fast, taking a 6-1 lead. Chattanooga fought back and tied the game at 18 and eventually took the lead 20-19. The Lady Mocs would slowly build their lead and cruised to victory in game one. The teams traded points to begin game two until the Bucs opened a small 11-8 lead. ETSU then caught fire, winning 19 of the next 24 points to take game two, 30-13. The Bucs would again open up a small lead in game three, holding a 9-6 advantage after 15 points. The Lady Mocs would again fight back and take the lead 20-19. The Bucs, however, would take the lead right back at 23-22. ETSU would win seven of the next 10 points to win game three, 30-25. Chattanooga jumped out to an early lead in game four, but that was quickly neutralized as ETSU would take the lead 8-7. Chattanooga would regain the advantage, 11-10, but the Bucs not be down for long as they took the lead back 18-17. The Bucs would build their lead and took the final game 30-24, although Chattanooga would threaten, cutting the ETSU lead to as few as two points at 25-23. The Bucs had a team effort tonight as only two players had double-digit kills, but only one player that saw action had fewer than seven. Sophomore outside hitter Kate Steidle led the Bucs with 18 kills and also added seven digs. Senior setter Carey Cavanaugh had an excellent all-around match, tallying 41 assists, 11 digs and eight kills. Sophomore setter Jessica Miller had a match-high 18 digs on the evening for the Bucs. Chattanooga was led by outside hitter Kari Krouse, who had a team-high 16 kills and 15 digs. Setter Emily McGinnis had 39 assists and added six digs and five kills for the Lady Mocs. The Bucs return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they face Georgia Southern in Brooks Gym. The Lady Mocs now travel to Appalachian State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the second match of a three-match road trip.
