Clark Wins Long Jump as ETSU Track and Field Fairs Well in Day Two of Southern Conference Championships

Johnson City, Tenn. (April 19, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's Track and Field team concluded day two of the Southern Conference tournament by placing in several events. The men's team is currently placed fourth with 37 points and the women's team is placed fifth with 16 points after two days of competition. ETSU junior and now Southern Conference Champion Charvin Clark (Ellenwood, Ga.) won the men's long jump, with a leap of 7.30 meters. The Buccaneers had two second place finishers in the inaugural running of the steeplechase. ETSU's Emily Chaney (Maryville,Tenn.) and David Haefner (Hamberg, N.Y.) both took home second place honors in the time of 11:52.51 and 9:30.61 respectively. Chaney also finished fourth in the women's 10,000-meter run in 40:31.06. In the men's 10,000-meter run, ETSU's James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) finished second, turning in a clocking of 32:32.36. Chad Hyder (Kingsport, Tenn.) placed third in the men's shot put, heaving the shot 14.63 meters. In the women's 400-meter preliminaries ETSU's Jennifer Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed first and second in the time of 55.99 and 5.18. Simmons also finished sixth in the women's long jump with a jump of 5.56 meters. The finals will be held Saturday, April 20 at Liberty Bell starting at 8:30 a.m. running until 4:00 p.m. Appalachian State University is currently in the lead of both the men and women's events after two days of competition.
