Track Earns Several Wins at Clemson Relays

Clemson, S.C. (March 23, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's track and field team continued their outdoor season by taking part in the Clemson Relays at Clemson University this weekend. The women's team claimed three victories while the men took home the 5000-meter run win. The women fared very well this weekend. Emily Campbell (Maryville, Tenn.) won the 5000-meter run in 18:48.96. ETSU's women's 4x200-meter relay team earned a win with a mark of 1:44.77 at Clemson. In the 4x200m relay, Natasha Peyton (Richmond, Va.) ran 24.9 seconds, Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.) ran 25.7 seconds, Tawny Davis (Austin, Texas) ran 28.5 seconds and Nichola Cornish (Spartanburg, S.C.) ran 26.3 seconds. The women also claimed first place with a time of 12:55.36 in the distance medley relay. The women were close in the 1600m sprint medlay relay relay with a time of 4:08.03 but finished in second place. In the sprint medlay relay, Peyton ran the first 200m leg in 24.5 seconds, Davis ran the second 200m leg in 28 seconds, Collier ran the 400m leg in 57.3 seonds and Lauren Campbell (Powell, Tenn.) ran the 800m leg in 2:19. In the long jump, Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed third with a jump of 5.45 meters. Kristin Truman (Johnson City, Tenn.) jumped 5.23 meters to finish fifth. Brooke Deacon (Newton, Pa.) also participated in the long jump with a mark of 4.72 meters to finish sixth in the event. Meredith Charles (State College, Pa.) threw for 7.61 meters in the shot put to finish in eighth place. The victory in the 5000 meters went to James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) who ran a time of 14:53.37 in the event. Teammates Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) and Mike Farkas (Bluff City, Tenn.) finished third (15:14.33) and seventh (16:33.60), respectively. The men's 4x200 relay team finished in 1:31.64 to take third place. In the 4x400m relay, the men's team ran a 3:29.96 to finish in sixth spot. The distance medley team finished in second place with a time of 10:25.18. Rhett Ezzell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.88 meters. In the shot put, Chad Hyder (Kingsport, Tenn.) threw for 13.62 meters to earn a third-place finish. Next week, the Buc track and field team heads to Florida to take part in the Florida Relays on Thursday, March 28th.
