Lady Bucs Hand Wofford First Loss of Season, 76-74, in Overtime

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Dec. 5, 2001) - East Tennessee State sophomore forward Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C) had a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead East Tennessee State over Wofford, 76-74, in overtime. With the win, the Lady Bucs improved to 3-3 on the season, and 1-0 in Southern Conference play. The Lady Terriers fell to 5-1, 1-1. The squads traded leads in overtime, as first Wofford, then ETSU took the slight edge. The Lady Terriers went up by a point on a free throw by freshman Stephanie Ripberger with 1:21 reamining. Nine seconds later, the Lady Bucs' Ashley Reed (Barrackville, W. Va.) nailed a three-pointer to regain the two-point lead. The lead was stretched to four by two Summer Jones (Virgie, Ky.) free throws. Wofford's Jenny Nett cut it to two with a jumper at the 43-second mark. After a missed layup by ETSU, Wofford had a final chance to tie or win the game, but was unable to convert as the Lady Bucs grabbed the victory. East Tennessee State took an early lead in the game, building to as much as an eight-point advantage in the first half. However, Wofford would battle back before the break to lead by two, 40-38, paced by Nett's 12 first-half points. The second half momentum was nearly the same as the first. The Lady Bucs again edged ahead by eight, leading 60-52 on a Trantham jumper with 9:41 remaining. Once more, the Lady Terriers would answer as Stephanie Adelaine and Nett converted on four free throws in the final 1:09 to tie the game at 68. The double-double was the second of the season for Trantham, who duplicated the feat earlier this season in a game against Akron. She was joined in double digits by Jones, who had 14 points, including 10-of-14 free throw shooting. Reed had 11 points for the Lady Bucs. Nett led Wofford with 22 points, while Pheobe Clark had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cathey Franks had nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Terriers. East Tennessee State continues its road swing with a Friday 7 p.m. game at UNC Asheville.
