Lady Bucs Fall to James Madison in Season Opener, 76-58

Sunday, November 18, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. (Nov. 18, 2001) - East Tennessee State senior guard Erin Thurman (Hixson, Tenn.) scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore forward Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, but it was not enough to get by the James Madison Dukes (2-0), as the Lady Bucs (0-1) fell 76-58 in their first game of the 2001-02 season from the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va. Thurman started the game on fire, scoring eight of ETSU's first 10 points and notching 10 of her own in the half. ETSU was threatening, but JMU senior guard Allyson Keener hit two three pointers and junior guard Lindsay Warner knocked down a short jumper as the Dukes scored six straight points to open up a nine-point (20-11) lead with 10:33 left in the first half. After an ETSU basket, JMU scored nine consecutive points to build a 16-point (29-13) advantage with 6:08 left. The Dukes shot the ball at a 54 percent clip in the first half and held a 37-22 lead at the break. The Dukes would open up their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 26 points in the second stanza. Thurman scored her 19 points on 8-16 shooting and 3-6 from three-point range. Trantham was just one basket away from a double-double, scoring eight points to go along with her 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Reed (Barrackville, W.Va.) came off the bench to score nine points in her collegiate debut. James Madison was led by Keener, who had 17 points, knocking down three three-pointers. Forward Nadine Morgan had 15 points and nine rebounds for JMU. The Lady Bucs return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Center for their home opener against Coastal Carolina and former ETSU men's basketball coach Alan LeForce, current women's coach at Coastal.
