ETSU's Johnson takes early individual lead at SoCon Championships; Bucs trail by six strokes as a team

(April 18, 2003) - East Tennessee State senior James Johnson (Barbados) shot a 3-under 69 Friday to claim the individual lead after the first day of play at the Southern Conference Championships being held this weekend at the par-72, 6,972-yard Forest Heights Country Club.
Daniel Sloan of Wofford trails Johnson by one stroke, while Charletson's Adam Grodhaus, Georgia Southern's Travis Mobley and Davidson's Dan Koernke are all tied in third place at 1-under-par with scores of 71.
As a team, the Buccaneers are currently third and trail front-running College of Charleston by six strokes. The Cougars shot a 1-under 287 to best second-place Wofford by four strokes.
While Johnson led the ETSU attack, sophomore Chase Baldwin (Plant City, Fla.) wrapped up the day tied for 10th with a 1-over 73. Meanwhile, freshman Derek McNamara (Galway, Ireland) finished tied for 14th at 2-over, sophomore Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) placed in a tied for 34th at 5-over, and sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) rounded out the Bucs' scoring tied for 41st with a 7-over 79.
Play in the 2003 SoCon Championships will resume Saturday, April 19 with the second round.
