Sunday, March 23, 2003

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Mar. 23, 2003) - UNC Wilmington sophomore pitcher Jamie Gostyla tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting East Tennessee State to three hits, as the Seahawks took game three of the two-day series, 2-0, Sunday in college softball action. UNCW has won two straight Southern Conference games to improve to 15-17 overall and 2-1 in conference play. ETSU goes to 13-10 and 1-2 in the SoCon. Gostyla retired 15 straight batters in picking up her fourth shutout this season with a 6-9 record. The righty hurler walked none with two strikeouts. UNCW senior outfielder Tiffany Lindemann went 2-for-3 from the plate, with two stolen bases and scored two runs in leading the Seahawks attack. UNCW knocked out seven hits against the Buccaneers. Senior first baseman Chrissy Freaney knocked in the lone RBI, for her ninth on the season. Freshman Melissa Moore and junior Christy Ross each doubled for the Seahawks. The Seahawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, as Lindemann hit a two-out single to center and stole second. Freshman catcher Meghan Mulcahy followed with a walk and pinched the Buccaneer's defense as she took off for second, as Lindemann crossed home plate before the throw. UNCW added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back two-out singles to leftfield by Lindemann and Mulcahy. Lindemann scored on an error by the pitcher. ETSU managed three singles by freshmen Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Jessica Lonsinger (Dale City, Va.) and sophomore Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.). Junior Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) pitched a complete-game, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits for the Buccaneers. McVay picked up the loss to dip to 6-3 on the year. The Buccaneers travel to Winthrop for a twin bill starting at 2 p.m. on Mar. 27. ETSU returns home for a three-game series versus UNC Greensboro Mar. 29-30.
