BOONE, N.C. (April 5, 2003) Appalachian State registered early leads in both games and used solid starting pitching to sweep East Tennessee State 7-3 and 8-5 in a Southern Conference doubleheader at Red Lackey Field in Boone, N.C. With the sweep, Appalachian State raises their record to 9-18, 3-8 in Southern Conference games. East Tennessee State falls to 9-17, 5-8 in SoCon matchups. Appalachian rookie Brett Pomykala set the tone in the first inning of the day with a three-run home run that gave the home team an early 3-0 lead. ETSU junior starter Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) allowed Ben Marsh to reach via an error and Eric Pittman reached base on a fielder's choice to set up Pomykala's two-out blast. East Tennessee State got one run back in the second inning when sophomore Justin Clear's (LaFollette. Tenn.) sacrifice fly to left field allowed freshman Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) to score from third base. Callicutt's run made it a 3-1 game. The Mountaineers added two runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to stretch their advantage to 7-1. Clint Johns scored on an RBI single by Ben Marsh and Graham Thompson's single to left field plated Ty Racette. With one out in the third inning, the Apps used back-to-back infield singles by Johns and Racette to score two runs. Clear, who finished the first game 3-for-3, with three runs batted in for East Tennessee State, knocked in his second run of the game on a single that plated sophomore Kevin Brotherton (Erwin, Tenn.). Brotherton reached base after being hit by pitch. Joe Norton registered four hit batsmen over his six innings on the mound. In the sixth inning, Calicutt opened the frame with a double. Clear singled home Calicutt two batters later to set the final margin. Appalachian reliever Monty Fast gave up one hit over three innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season. ETSU starter Tim Turner gave up seven runs, only four of which were earned, over three innings to receive the loss. Freshman Jeremy Hall (Johnson City, Tenn.) scattered four hits over five innings of relief. In the nightcap, Appalachian scored five runs in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead and hold on for the 8-5 win. Nick Peterson survived a rally in the seventh and earned his second win of the season. Appalachian held a 5-2 lead in third inning after an RBI single by Joey Robinson and two batters later an East Tennessee State error allowed Eric Pittman and Robinson to score. Justin Thomas's two-run triple to right field gave the home team a 7-2 advantage and chased ETSU junior starter Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.) after two and two-thirds innings of work. In the fourth inning, Robinson doubled Pittman home from second base to put Appalachian in front 8-2. ETSU relievers Trevor Smith (Newport, Tenn.), Mike Bauer (Kingsport, Tenn.), and Willie McKenzie (Kingsport, Tenn.) teamed to allow just one run and four hits over the final five and one-third innings to put a halt to the Appalachian scoring. The Buccaneers' Davis Burklin (Knoxville, Tenn.) doubled to score Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) and cut the lead to 8-3. Howdeshell finished the second game 5-for-5, with two doubles and two runs scored. In the seventh, Howdeshell led off the inning with a single and Burklin followed with a two-run home run to make it an 8-5 game. Appalachian reliever Jonathan Reeder curtailed any ETSU rally hopes by working a scorless eighth and ninth inning to seal the sweep. ETSU and ASU finish their SoCon series Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
