BLACKSBURG, Va. (March 18, 2003) - Hokies Brad Bauder and Wyatt Toregas drove in three runs apiece as Virginia Tech handed East Tennessee State a 12-4 baseball loss Tuesday from English Field in Blacksburg, Va. Tech (9-6) jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the game on run-scoring singles by left fielder Matt Kalish and Toregas in the first inning. The Buccaneers matched that in the third inning on RBI-doubles by right fielder Jordan Abromovitz (South Park, Pa.) and catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.), then took a 3-2 lead on a Tech throwing error in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hokies tied the game when Toregas hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice and took the lead for good on first baseman David McDonalds's RBI-double. Bauder then ignited a four-run sixth inning with an RBI-triple. The senior center fielder added a single in the seventh inning and a two-run double in the eighth. Jake Chaney got the pitching victory for Tech with five innings of work. ETSU's Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.) was charged with the loss, going five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, while striking out two. Only two of the runs Hall allowed were earned. The Buccaneers, now 7-12 on the season, got two hits from Abromovitz. ETSU returns to action March 21-23 as they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. in a three game series with Southern Conference foe, Western Carolina.
