ETSU Men's Tennis loses to Old Dominion, 4-3

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 24, 2003) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team battled hard in singles play, but fell to No. 75 Old Dominion, 4-3, Monday from the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club in Bristol, Tenn. Old Dominion took the first point after sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Zoltan Csandadi and Izak van der Merwe of ODU defeated junior Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) and senior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina), 8-4. The Old Dominion duo of Calin Milos and Patrik Binkowski were victorious at No. 2 doubles over ETSU sophomore Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and junior Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina), 8-5. In the final doubles match the ETSU team of junior Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) fell to Salman Mohammed and Niklas Oskarsson of ODU at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. The two teams split the six singles matches, with ETSU winning at No. 3,4 and 5 and ODU taking the matches at No. 1, 2 and 6. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich fell to van der Merwe, 6-2, ret. Old Dominion's Csandadi defeated Salazar, 6-3, 6-4. The Buccaneers (2-5) got their first singles win at No. 3 singles as Iglesias won over Milos, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Fiuri kept the ETSU momentum going with at win over Binkowski of ODU at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. ETSU's final singles win came at No. 5 as Serrano defeated Mohammed of Old Dominion, 6-4, 7-6. To ice the match for the Monarchs, Oskarsson defeated ETSU senior Francisco Diaz (Weston, Fla.) at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1. The Buccaneer men's tennis team returns to action on Mar. 8-10 from the HEB Championships from Corpus Christi, Tex.
