GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 28, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Southern Conference rival, UNC Greensboro, Friday afternoon. UNCG captured the doubles point by taking two of the three sets. Lindsey Peel and Kate LaCoste combined to knock off Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) at No. 1, 8-5. UNCG's Carlin Kannan and Amanda Eutzler defeated Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.), 8-3, at No. 2. ETSU claimed the No. 3 victory as Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) defeated Lourdes Moran and Emily Tanner, 8-3. UNCG's Kannan got the ball rolling in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, victory over Ziolkowska. At No. 2, the Spartans' Peel posted a 7-6 (4), 7-5, victory over Halim. ETSU's Irey then posted a 6-1, 6-2, victory over LaCoste. The Spartans captured victories at No. 4 and No. 5, as Moran defeated McInnis, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Eutzler defeated Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1. ETSU claimed a victory at No. 6, as Villavicencio defeated Tanner, 6-2, 6-1. ?We played so much better today, we had chances on every court,? said head coach Steve Brooks. ?We got nervous when we knew we had the match in our hands, but I know we can do it, we are still a good team.? ETSU falls to 9-13 overall, 1-5 in Southern Conference play. The Buccaneers match against Wofford Saturday March 29, has been rescheduled for April 13.
