Women's tennis struggles in 6-1 loss to Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. (March 25, 2003) - Davidson's women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over East Tennessee State, Tuesday afternoon, at Davidson's Covington Courts. ETSU, after ending a seven-match losing streak against Western Carolina on Sunday, struggled to remain in the win column, falling to 9-12 overall, 1-4 in conference action. Davidson managed to attack early and earn the doubles point. The Wildcats are now 7-0 when taking the early lead. At the top position, sophomores Kelly Fillnow and Meghan Fillnow shutout Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.), 8-0. The Buccaneer tandem of Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) defeated Meggie Patterson and freshman Lindsey Powel, 8-5 at number two doubles. Katherine Hatch and sophomore Sarah Borkowski picked up an 8-5 victory over Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) at the number three spot. Davidson had little trouble in singles action. Kelly Fillnow defeated Ziolkowska, 6-1, 6-3, at number one and Patterson handled Halim, 6-2, 6-3, at number two. Meghan Fillnow recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Irey at number three. Powel shutout Aldea, 6-0, 6-0, at the number four position. Hatch won her singles match versus McInnis, 6-2, 6-3 at the five position. ETSU's lone victory of the day came at number six singles, as Buccaneer junior Tatiana Arriaran (Cocabamba, Bolivia) defeated Sarah Borkowski, 6-4, 6-2. The Buccaneers return to action March 29, when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on SoCon foe, UNC Greensboro. The match is set to begin at 2:30.
