Six Advance in Virginia Tech Fall Invitational

Blacksburg, Va. (September 27, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's women's tennis team advanced six into day two of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational. The Buccaneer's also advanced one pair in doubles play. In singles action Tatiana Arriarian (Cochabamba, Bolivia) defeated Ashley Stevenson of Radford in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to advance into the winners bracket before losing to Lenka Schulzova, 6-1, 6-0. Five other Buccaneer's lost in their first round matches, but defeated their opponents in the losers bracket to advance. In Doubles play Freshman Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw Poland) and Courtney McInnis (Tampa, Fla.) defeated Jihane Najdi and Caroline Downs of Radford, 8-4, to advance into second round play that is set to begin tomorrow at 5:30. The tournament, hosted by Virginia Tech will conclude on Sunday. Second round play will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. and run throughout the day.
