ETSU Signs Women's Tennis Transfer

Monday, July 29, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (July 29, 2002) - Head coach Steve Brooks has announced Courtney McInnis (Tampa, Fla.), a junior transfer from Gardner-Webb University, will join East Tennessee State's women's tennis program for this upcoming season. While at Gardner-Webb, McInnis played No. 1 singles and doubles for the past two years. As a freshman in 2001, McInnis won the NCCAA national title in both singles and doubles and led her team to the team championship. Last year she guided Gardner-Webb to a second place finish in the NCCAA national tournament. McInnis went undefeated during the regular season as a high school junior and senior. In 2000 she won both the Maine State High School Singles Championship and the New England High School Singles Championship and has trained at the famous Sattlebrook Tennis Academy near Tampa, Fla. "I am very excited to sign Courtney," Brooks said. "With the experience of successfully competing at the number one spot at another NCAA Div. I school for two years, along with winning a national singles championship, she will be able to step in and help us now. Courtney has the desire, athleticism and talent to improve greatly during the spring season." Brooks is excited about the prospects of his first recruiting class since being named the Bucs head coach at the beginning of the 2001-02 season. McInnis will join other prized recruits Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland), Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Elena Volobueva (Krasnodar, Russia). "I am very fortunate to be able to sign four great players this year," Brooks said. "Adding Courtney, Jewel, Sylwia and Elena to the team will definitely help us compete in the strong Southern Conference."
