Volleyball Coach Deane Webb Signs Contract Extension

Friday, August 02, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (Aug. 2, 2002) East Tennessee State University athletic director Todd Stansbury announced Friday that volleyball head coach Deane Webb has signed a three-year contract extension through 2005. Webb came to ETSU last season, and led the Bucs to a 20-6 record and a second place finish in the Southern Conference. The team set a school record by winning 13 of their first 14 matches on the way to their best SoCon finish since 1987. The Bucs went all season without losing consecutive matches, the first time that has happened in school history. East Tennessee State finished the season 78th in the final NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). Following the 2000 campaign, the Bucs finished 187th among 312 NCAA Division I schools. But following their impressive 2001 campaign, ETSU improved 109 positions. "I am honored that ETSU has offered a multi-year contract, and I gladly accept the offer," said Webb. "I greatly appreciate the generosity shown by our president, Dr. Stanton, and Todd Stansbury, our Athletic Director. This year has been a year of growth throughout our program - from the team's play on the court last season to the tremendous growth of our camps and the formation of our volleyball booster club (The Rally Club); it has been an exciting year. It was a year that we took several steps towards becoming a program that ETSU can and will be very proud of, and I look forward to continued growth for our program in the upcoming years." "Coach Webb has done a great job in a short time here at ETSU," said Stansbury. "This is a reward for moving our volleyball program to the top echelon of the Southern Conference and putting us in a position to compete nationally." East Tennessee State opens its 2002 season on Aug. 30-31 as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the Spring Hill Suites Invitational. The Bucs' first match is on Aug. 30 against host Charlotte at 7:30 p.m.
