Tuesday, June 17, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 17, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's assistant track and field coach Michelle Byrne announced Tuesday that thrower Jessica Bush (Southern Pines, N.C.) and sprinter Jennifer Knox (Connelly Springs, N.C.) have signed national letters of intent to join the Buccaneers in the 2003-04 season. Bush was a four-year track and field letter winner at Pinecrest High School. She placed second in the discus (123'3") at State Championships and broke her high school's record that had stood for almost 20 years. Additionally, she holds the Chic-Fil-A Invitational record in the discus. Bush also was a four-year letter winner in basketball and a two-year letter winner in volleyball. "As a staff we are excited to sign a thrower of Jessica's caliber," commented Byrne. "Her marks indicate how she will be able to provide depth in the upcoming season. It will be exciting to coach her and see her marks improve." Knox was a four-time All-Conference winner in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. She posted times of 12.38 in the 100 meters and 24.38 in the 200 meters. Knox was undefeated in both races in the conference during her career at East Burke High School and was named athlete of the year for track and field for the 2003 season. Knox finished second in the 200 meters at the regional meet and earned a berth to the North Carolina 4A State Track and Field Championships where she finished second. She competed at the Chic-Fil-A Invitational where she won the 200 meters and took second in the 100 meters. At the Pepsi Outback Invitational, Knox won the 100 meters and took second in the 200 meters. In addition to track and field, Knox was a four-year letter winner in soccer and was the top goal scorer for her team, the Lady Cavaliers. "We are thrilled at Jennifer's commitment to ETSU. She has the ability to make an impact right away in our sprinting group. Jennifer is already sprinting at the conference level and will have a bright future." "It's great for the program to sign two young women form North Carolina. They both bring a wealth of talent that will help us to become better and to reach our team goals."
